What is a Tree Tender?

Tree Tenders are folks who have completed the PHS class and have knowledge of tree care and identification. They know how to bring people together to get more trees in the community!

Tree Tenders are vital the mission of Plant One Million, an initiative lead by PHS to increase the Greater Philadelphia Area tree canopy coverage to thirty percent.

How do I become a Tree Tender?

Attend the fall classes in your neighborhood. In just three short evening sessions, you can become an expert on trees and a green leader in your neighborhood!

A Place at the Table Screening with PHS

This documentary investigates hunger in America and proposes solutions to the problem. Screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring renowned anti-hunger advocates Steveanna Wynn, executive director of SHARE Food Program and PHS City Harvest partner, and Mariana Chilton, associate professor at Drexel School of Public Health and director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities. Free, but space is limited.

Philly Tree People is a group of volunteers dedicated to beautifying our community. Trees are planted by the Philly Tree People to enhance the Kensington, East Kensington and Fishtown communities. Philly Tree People is trained by Philadelphia Horticulture Society through a free program called Tree Tenders. The PHS Tree Tenders have been training volunteers in tree biology, identification and care since 1993. This wonderful and beneficial program extends across five counties in the Philadelphia region.

In collaboration with PHS and Philadelphia Parks & Rec is the Plant 1 Million campaign. The Plant 1 Million campaign is a part of Mayor Nutter’s plan to make Philadelphia and surrounding areas greener than ever.

Ways to get trees:

Through PHS Tree Tenders groups, you can sign up to receive free trees for in front of your property. You can also get applications at the NKCDC office. For more information, click here.
Through Philadelphia Parks & Rec, you can sign up to receive trees in 5 gallon buckets on the day of the event. For more information, click here.

The Changing Hydrology and Ecology of Philadelphia

Co-sposored by PHS and the Wagner Free Institute of Science, this six-session course will provide a survey of the changing wetlands and waterways of Philadelphia and how they have interacted with the flora, fauna, and human land use of the region. Taught by

Dr. David Hewitt, botany research associate at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the course offers scientific information and case studies, as well as an optional Saturday field trip.
